Have a fruit tree in your yard that needs attention? Curious about grafting, pruning, or natural pest management? The orchard care workshop series offers accessible, skill-building workshops for beginners and experienced growers alike. Each session is designed to be practical, interactive, and immediately applicable. Learn pruning, grafting, pest management, soil development and even how to turn non-fruiting trees into fruiting trees! This immersive series guides participants through every stage of the process and starts on March 21st. Each of these classes can be taken à la carte or together as part of a skill-building series.

“Rehabilitating habitats and local ecology through native perennial plantings and invasive management has been a joy and at times a struggle. Watching the environment heal itself, with a little educated input and guidance, is really rewarding and feels like being part of a never-ending performative art piece where you are both the creator and the observer." - Bradford Oza

Pit-fired ceramics is a 30,000 year old process of nestling unfired pots together in the ground surrounded by combustible materials to produce finished ceramic vessels. This workshop series will consist of three sessions, a clay building session, firing session and celebratory unveiling and potluck session. The Artmaking in the Garden Series, sponsored by RISCA, aims to engage the community with artistic practices at the intersection of sustainability and nature appreciation. Open and accessible to all ages and abilities.

At Session 1, students will build their ceramic vessels, learn basic hand building techniques and learn about the process and history of pit fired ceramics. During session 2, students will learn about the firing itself and load the pieces into the pit to be fired. The final session will be the following day where we will unload the ceramic work, clean and finish the work, and celebrate our pieces. Participants can bring a drink or snack to share at our final celebration.

What to bring, what to wear, what to expect: Please be mindful that this event takes place on a working farm, so comfortable, safe, and mud-worthy boots or closed-toed shoes are a must. Dress appropriate for the weather  with sunscreen, bug repellent and water. On firing day, please wear cotton or natural fiber clothing, long pants, and preferably  an outer layer long sleeve shirt. More information about preparedness, safety, and site-specific matters to follow in your participant confirmation email.

Instructor: Mollie Rose K Siebert (she/her) is a place-based artist & geographer based in Rhode Island with a love for community ceramics and outdoor education. She teaches clay at the Artist’s Exchange, and does community engagement and operations work at Anyhow Studio in Providence.
