Imagine a space where you can meander through, pick oregano, hazelnuts, asparagus & peaches. Where birds have their fill of haskaps, goumis, and boysenberries and ample nesting space for their young. Where soil is built by composting biomass that is chopped & dropped - teeming with fungal life, insects & microbes. Food and medicine for people, food and habitat for wildlife, and so much more!
Join us for a workshop at Revive the Roots Forest Garden to learn the basics of food forests, how they differ from other food production practices, and considerations for starting a food forest project on different scales.
Forest Gardens or Edible Food Forests are commonly seen in permaculture landscapes as abundant production spaces with multiple layers with overlapping complex functions.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, workshop participants should be able to:
  1. Define a forest garden and differentiate it from similar practices (e.g. fruit orchards, forest farming, etc.)
  2. Understand different planting structures (companion plantings, polyculture, guild, etc.)
  3. Identify the layers of the forest garden and be able to define their characteristics and purpose and how they interact with one another
  4. Understand the importance of interactions within each layer
  5. Understand the history and evolution of RtR’s forest garden and the broader concept of succession and how they might want to plan for succession as part of their planning process
  6. Further explore educational resources and feel inspired to implement their own forest garden
  7. Further explore educational resources and feel inspired to implement their own forest garden
