Pit-fired ceramics is a 30,000 year old process of nestling unfired pots together in the ground surrounded by combustible materials to produce finished ceramic vessels. This workshop series will consist of three sessions, a clay building session, firing session and celebratory unveiling and potluck session. The Artmaking in the Garden Series, sponsored by RISCA, aims to engage the community with artistic practices at the intersection of sustainability and nature appreciation. The Songwriters Circle hosted by Morgan Lane is a communal, collaborative, creative, and hopefully damn fun concept of a show!
A welcome song will help folks settle into the beautiful space and into community with each other. The songwriters will then go around the circle twice sharing songs that they’ve written inspired by the very nature that Revive the Roots so well supports. Who knows, the musicians may even play on each other’s songs or welcome the listeners to join in?! Audience members will be given pages that they’re invited to fill with doodles and/or words based on the songs they hear throughout the night. These pages will serve as inspiration for a short lil musical improvisation by yours truly (but also you?!) to close out the show. Each taking one of the pages swapped with someone else at the end of the night will serve as a memory of our time together. :) As always with audience participation, you’re empowered to engage as much as and in whatever ways you feel most excited to. |

Throughout the day
To round out a day of fantastic music and fascinating presenters, Rootstock will host two leading lights in conservation. The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council and the Rhode Island Land Trust will both be on hand to discuss their important work.
Of course, there’ll be arts and crafts aplenty, with Artists’ Exchange leading them through the day. And there’ll be blooms galore by way of a fantasy garden in the greenhouse cultivated by founding RTR member Tyler. They’re there for festivalgoers to pick their own bouquets.

About this event:
Wool Education and Felting - Felt is not your standard precut sheets from the store. photos and pots from Pit Fire Ceramics Class taught by Kit Grindeland @goblinhands at @anyhowstudio in 2024 at @sevenarrowsfarm
|
Gather at the beautiful grounds of Mowry Commons for a three session ceramics course. Learn, make and take at this all levels course!
|
About this Course
Pit-fired ceramics is a 30,000 year old process of nestling unfired pots together in the ground surrounded by combustible materials to produce finished ceramic vessels. This workshop series will consist of three sessions, a clay building session, firing session and celebratory unveiling and potluck session. The Art Making in the Garden Series, sponsored by RISCA, aims to engage the community with artistic practices at the intersection of sustainability and nature appreciation. Open and accessible to all ages and abilities.
At Session 1, students will build their ceramic vessels, learn basic hand building techniques and learn about the process and history of pit fired ceramics. During Session 2, students will learn about the firing itself and load the pieces into the pit to be fired. The Final Session will be the following day where we will unload the ceramic work, clean and finish the work, and celebrate our pieces. Participants can bring a drink or snack to share at our final celebration.
Instructor: Mollie Rose K Siebert (she/her) is a place-based artist & geographer based in Rhode Island with a love for community ceramics and outdoor education. She lives on a cooperative farm and teaches clay at the Artist’s Exchange, and does community engagement and operations work at Anyhow Studio in Providence.
What to bring, what to wear, what to expect: Please also be mindful that this event takes place on a working farm, so comfortable, safe, and mud-worthy boots or closed-toed shoes are a must. Dress appropriate for the weather with sunscreen, bug repellent and water. On firing day, please wear cotton or natural fiber clothing, long pants, and preferably an outer layer long sleeve shirt. More information about preparedness, safety, and site-specific matters to follow in your participant confirmation email.
All levels welcome: New to pit firing? Join the club! We are learning together most of the time, and instruction is based on what the students are interested in bringing to the session. There are incredible resources online to help you familiarize with the process, this masterclass with pit fire master Jane White is a good place to start. We would love it if you would bring your questions and inspiration with you.
All ages and abilities: This course involves open fire, not recommended for children under the age of 8. Children under 16 must attend with an adult guardian. Minors under the age of 18 must have written permission to attend. If your require special accommodations please reach out to [email protected]

Felting Workshop
About this event:
Wool Education and Felting - Felt is not your standard precut sheets from the store. Study the ancient, sustainable art form of felting as we create functional pieces of art using materials direct from their source! Participants will learn about and work with raw sheep wool from our 3 ewes: Clover, Peach, and Hazelnut. Using wool, soap, and water we will make one of a kind pieces of felt.
Revive the Roots and Artists' Exchange brought sheep to Mowry Commons in 2017! This program involves individuals from local group homes in the Smithfield area, who come to Mowry Commons daily, to care for and learn about sheep. The wool which is sheared from the sheep twice a year is used for arts programming in part with the Artists Exchange.

Join Hannah, RTR's biscuit baker extraordinaire, to learn her tips and tricks for baking biscuits in the outdoor Cobb oven!
About this event:
A Cobb oven is an earthen oven made of clay, straw and other natural materials and is one of the oldest methods of baking. Cooking outside is the best, less mess to clean, plus the smells of fresh air and wood smoke. Spring herbs will inspire our biscuits as we play with seasonal flavors. All participants will bring home the biscuits they make! Gluten and/or dairy free biscuit options available. Email [email protected] if you would like to make gluten free or dairy free biscuits.

Plein Air Painting
About this event:
Plein air painting is a technique in which we leave our studio behind and experience painting and drawing the landscape around us. This practice dates back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by French Impressionists such as Caude Monet and Auguste Renoir. Mowry Commons is full of beautiful hidden landscape gems. Explore the property, and apply what you’ve learned about impressionism to create your own landscape painting of the great outdoors.
Join artists Shannon Casey and Hannah Purcell Martin for wonder in the woods with an artists' eye. Paint set provided but full free to bring you favorite travel set!
Made possible by Artists' Exchange and Rhode Island State Council for the Arts. Free - Register Here!
